What is Bariatric Surgery? Also known as weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery reduces the size of the stomach, and depending on the procedure, shortens the intestine. The Gastric Bypass procedure reduces food intake and the amount of food absorbed, while the LAP-BAND® System simply reduces food intake. Neither is cosmetic surgery. Because both procedures make your stomach smaller, you feel satisfied sooner, so you are less inclined to overeat. The Results are Dramatic! Immediately following surgery, most patients lose weight rapidly. The rate of weight loss tends to be faster with Gastric Bypass than with the LAP-BAND® System. But since individual results vary, we recommend that you consult your surgeon about weight loss expectations. Are There Other Benefits of Bariatric Surgery? Yes. Surgery improves most obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, heart disease and many orthopedic conditions. As an added benefit, your life expectancy increases. Not only do you look better, you feel better! Our Weight Loss Medical Team Our Board-certified surgeons are renowned experts in the field of bariatric surgery.
